How uncomfortable would chopped jalapenos be to my dog's nose?

I am going to be preparing my vegetable garden soon to compost over the winter. I have two young dogs, and last year (after we got them) they destroyed every plant. In addition to a fence they will probably be able to hop, I thought I might train them now to stay out by sprinkling chopped jalapenos (or hotter peppers!) around the perimeter and all over the beds. Do you think they would get the message? This way, it's nothing toxic (although probably uncomfortable) and they think the garden is punishing them for being in there, not me. Anybody had experience with this? I did try just cayenne last year and some sprays but it wasn't very effective. I want them out but I don't want to hurt them! I think they'd get the hint and stay away after one good whiff!
