Why do some many trucks in the Denver Colorado area have grille guards?

i am not from the area (New Hampshire) and iv quickly noticed that more trucks or 4x4's have grille guards, brush guard, or push bars then iv ever seen. i was questioning if these serve a purpose in the area or are they maybe a trend around the area?
